The Scripted Stage: When Warmth Becomes a Technique

Sociologist Erving Goffman described social life as a kind of theater, with people managing a "front stage" performance and a "backstage" reality. His framework predates modern persuasion science, but it explains exactly what you're describing: once people learn the script, that script becomes available to everyone, sincere or not, and the audience can no longer use the performance itself as reliable evidence of what's behind it.

You're right that this has spread well past call centers. Sales training is the obvious extension, but it now shows up in dating advice culture (where manufactured warmth and manufactured scarcity get explicitly taught as techniques), in politics (cultivated "relatability" and folksy warmth as a campaign asset), in therapy and coaching adjacent spaces, in influencer culture, and even in ordinary workplace networking, where "strategic friendliness" toward people who might be useful later is now openly discussed as a career skill. Customer-facing AI and chatbots have absorbed it too, often quite deliberately.

The unsettling part is that this isn't really solvable by getting better at spotting fakes, because the technique works precisely by mimicking the real thing closely enough that no surface-level marker reliably distinguishes them. A few things do help shift the odds, though they're heuristics rather than proof. Genuine warmth tends to be contingent and responsive: it shifts when you push back, say no, or seem upset, while performed warmth often stays oddly steady or escalates in a scripted way regardless of your reaction. It also tends to be specific rather than generic, picking up on details about you rather than working off a template. And one of the more telling tests is what happens when there's no longer any incentive attached, does the warmth survive once the sale is closed, the call has ended, or there's nothing left for the other person to gain.

There's also a complicating wrinkle worth knowing about, which is that the line between performed and genuine can blur even for the person doing the performing. Arlie Hochschild's research on emotional labor distinguishes "surface acting" (faking the emotion) from "deep acting" (actually working yourself into feeling it), and many service workers report that performed warmth, sustained long enough, becomes real warmth. So the binary you're sensing, real versus technique, isn't always a clean split even in principle.

The broader cost of all this is a kind of generalized social suspicion: once you know the technique exists, you start applying scrutiny to people who were never using it, which is exhausting and can make ordinary kindness harder to trust. There's no clean fix for that, but noticing it, as you're doing, is usually the first step toward navigating it without becoming either gullible or needlessly cynical.
